Are your running on empty? How would you like to get up to an extra 5 miles per gallon? If you perform these simple tips you can get the most out of a tank full.
Monitor tires -- Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder. (Let the tires cool down before checking the air pressure.) Out-of-line wheels, as evidenced by uneven tread wear, should be aligned by a professional.
Remove excess weight -- Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle. Less weight means better mileage.
Consolidate trips and errands -- Also, try to travel when traffic is light so you can avoid stop-and-go conditions.
Avoid excessive idling -- Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.
Observe speed limits -- Besides being dangerous, 75 mph really burns the gas.
Keep your engine "tuned up --" A well-maintained engine operates at peak efficiency, maximizing gas mileage.
Use windows and air conditioning wisely -- Your mileage should improve if you keep the windows closed at highway speeds, since air drag is reduced. This is true even with the air conditioning on -assuming that the system is in good working order. But turn the air conditioning off in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.

When selecting a new auto, in addition to comparing price, warranty, service, availability of parts ant their prices, it is important to consider gas mileage. Compare different models, the heavier the automobile the greater the consumption of gas per mile. Remember that accessories add to the cost, buy only those that you need.
Improve your driving habits:
Your driving technique is the most important factor in economizing fuel.
Drive at moderate speeds; increased speeds increase the wind resistance and fuel consumption.
Whenever driving conditions permit, maintain a constant or stable speed. Increasing and decreasing velocity can decrease fuel efficiency.
If your car has air-conditioning, use it only when necessary. The continual use of air-conditioner increases the amount of gasoline your car uses.
When Purchasing Gasoline:
You can economize when purchasing gasoline by following these recommendations:
Compare prices. All gasoline stations are required by DACO to post their prices on a sign clearly visible from the roadway.
Remember that the gas pump that one selects will affect the price paid. "Self-Service" is the most economical alternative. The purchase of gasoline with a credit card is always the most expensive alternative. Also, using the "Full-Service" pump will me more expensive since other services, such as, the cleaning of windshield, checking of water, oil and battery are included. If you do not need these services avoid "Full-Service" and save money.
Use the type of gasoline recommended by the car manufacturer as indicated in the owner’s manual. In the market one finds gasoline with different octane’s, you should use the one recommended by the manufacturer.
Check the amount of gasoline your automobile uses on a regular basis in order to calculate the average mileage per liter of gasoline used.
PLANNING YOUR TRIPS
Select the shortest routes. Remember that traveling via expressways is twice as economical as routes with greater traffic, given that there are no traffic lights, which result in frequent stop and go.
If there is more that one automobile in your family use the one that is more gas efficient with greater frequency.
Care and maintainance of your vehicle:
Check the air pressure of tires (or pneumatics) at least once a month. Follow the recommendations of the manufacturer regarding tire pressure as indicated in the owner’s manual.
Keeping your car running at peak efficiency is the first step.
